On another note, I was thinking about friendships and the importance of them especially in our later years and as expats living apart from family and friends back home. It’s reported that a large circle of friends may actually add years to your life! One study found people with many ‘chums’ had a 22% better chance of living through the 10-year period of the study than those with only a few ‘buddies’. Good friends can often encourage you to make healthy choices, like staying active. They can also help to squash stress that can have a positive impact on your heart, gut, and even your immune system. The connection is not clear, but a strong social network can reduce your risk of stress and depression. When you’re feeling good, you’re more likely to take care of yourself. One study found that people who had many social ties were four times less likely to get a cold virus than those with few social relationships.
In addition, your friends’ happiness can be contagious. Happy people might spread their good fortune say researchers, so being around people in general gets our minds working in many different ways. It challenges us, too. If you can, spend time with friends and family. Even support from people you’re not close with, such as a caregiver or neighbor can help keep your brain sharp.
Of course, a perfect opportunity to meet with existing friends and meet new ones is at our Friday Breakfast Clubs, our General Meetings and the various OGA’s!
We are always looking for feedback from our members so if you have something on your mind, please just drop me a line via [email protected].
A Special Request …
Recently, Pern’s refurbished their restaurant interior to include portraits of people who donated money to the arts community. One, Veronica, came to Chiang Mai along with her husband Maurice, a couple of years ago. Both are CEC members and regulars at Pern’s. Veronica’s portrait is on the wall as a birthday gift from her husband. They would now like to add a portrait of Maurice to the group.
Sadly, the original artist is not available. So Brian Pern, with two CEC members, Paul and Rhonda Dawson, have been searching for an artist who could paint a portrait in the same sty
I recently was asked if I could help in the search for an artist! If you or someone you know is available to do this or are aware of a place to contact, please drop me a line via [email protected].
