Thailand is typically thought of as tropical. For those of us who have lived here for some time, however, we know that a hat, scarf and coat are often needed during the winter season here in the north. Up in the mountains it gets much colder and people can die from the cold.
You can help people living in the mountains if you are returning to Chiang Mai from overseas. Please consider bringing along some children’s winter clothes. Pop into your nearest thrift store and buy fuzzy warm onesies, puffy jackets, sweaters, and other warm clothing for small children.
This year we are helping poor refugees at a Shan refugee camp in Wiang Haeng District. There are currently about 500 refugees, almost half of whom are children, staying in the camp, set up in 2002 after fighting on the border between the Burma Army and the Shan State Army-South. With the onset of a more peaceful Myanmar, many of these people have been forgotten.
