July 26 Meeting

Sunday, July 20, 2008

The meeting on Saturday 12th July took place at the Shangri-La Hotel on Chang Klan Road. It was the first meeting at the new venue, and all in all, a great success.

The club was warmly welcomed on behalf of the hotel by Food and Beverage Manager, Julian Wipper and was served an excellent selection of tea, coffee, fruit and pastries.

We were treated to a talk and presentation by Thitipol Kanteewong, a professional Lanna musician, on traditional Northern Thai instruments and melodies.

It was a fascinating insight into the various styles of Lanna music which include sacred music heard in the temples and associated with Buddhism; royal music which has been played to the monarchy for centuries; agricultural traditional music which is often heard at festivals and in small rural villages and contemporary music, a mix of Eastern and Western styles.

Once the talk was over, Thitipol gave a demonstration on some of the instruments including very rare ones which are no longer available on the market. He truly showcased the beauty of Lanna music and was received with rapturous applause.

The next meeting is on July 26th and along with the usual meeting and greeting, prize giveaways, open forum and book exchange, we also have a talk by Captain Henrick Peterson from the Medical Service Corps.

Captain Peterson is going to give us a presentation on the US Navy’s medical research programmes around the world. He was commanding officer and director of the Centre for New and Emerging Diseases in South East Asia from 1995 - 1999. He will also be talking about the US Navy’s humanitarian support in the wake of the 2002 Tsunami.

It is guaranteed to be a fascinating talk, so come and join us and be entertained!
